Cub Scouts lead the way

At the end of June Cub Scouts from Nailsworth aiming to gain the Cub Scout Navigator Badge enjoyed a number of hikes in the local countryside.  Each hike was about four miles in length, and the Cub Scouts took it in turns to use the map and compass to lead the group.

Cub Scouts go back in time

Cub Scouts from Nailsworth travelled back in time in June when they visited the Black Country Museum.  During the day they experienced a trip down the mine, a lesson in the school room, a ride on vintage bus, the attractions of the fairground, a view through the old telescopes in the observatory, the remarkable science of the working Newcombe Engine, and visits to the many old shops, houses and industrial sites in the museum.  The museum staff brought history to life giving everyone an insight into life at the start of the 20th Century.

Nailsworth Cub Scouts and Scouts take to the water

During the May school holiday Nailsworth Scouts enjoyed four days at the Scout Water Activities Centre at Marlow taking part in a range of activities on (and sometimes in) the water.  Activities included sailing, kayaking, rowing, canoeing, raft building, dragon boating, bell boating and the leap of faith - as well as games, the assault course, a history trail, cooking and much more!

Scouts help Beavers make and fly kites

In May two Nailsworth Scouts, Patrol Leaders Tom and Josh, enjoyed helping the Beaver Scouts make kites, and then a few weeks later to fly their kites on Minchinhampton Common.  The kites were made from thin 'green sticks' usually used to support potted house plants, and plastic sheet. The evening selected for kite flying was blessed with a steady light wind and warm sunshine.  The event was so popular it was hard to persuade some of the Beaver Scouts that it was time to go home at the end of the evening!

Nailsworth Scouts Backpack along a section of the Cotswold Way.

From the 14 - 16 April a some members of the Eagle Patrol, led by their Patrol Leader, backpacked along a section of the Cotswold Way.  Starting at Cheltenham and walking to the County Scouting Centre at Cranham on the first day, and then continuing on to the District Scout Campsite at Pennwood (near Selsley) on the second day.  Finally they walked back to the Scout HQ in Nailsworth on the last day.  During the expedition they were self-sufficient carrying all their equipment and food with them.  Prior to the expedition they had also planned their route, gone shopping as a group to purchase their food from the butcher, baker, green-grocer, etc. in Nailsworth, and organised their camping equipment.

Nailsworth Scouts walk 60Km in a day and raise over £600 for the County Air Ambulance.

On 7 April Tom and Ollie set out from the Gloucestershire County Border in Tewkesbury at 6am and walked 60 kilometres (36 miles), raising over £600 for the County Air Ambulance.  Tom organised the walk and collected sponsorship after his younger brother had been air lifted to Gloucester Hospital after an accident in the snow in February, when Tom discovered that the Air Ambulance is funded entirely by donations and gets no NHS or government funding.  Scouts are known for helping other people, Tom decided that his challenging project was a good way of helping the Air Ambulance that had helped is brother to carry on helping other people.

District Scout Ready Steady Cook Competition

Nailsworth Scout Troop entered a team in the Stroud and Tetbury District's Ready Steady Cook Competition (1 Feb 09) and came third out of eight troops that entered.  Each team had to choose a bag of ingredients at random, and then use them to cook something tasty.  For a started the Nailsworth team cooked wholemeal bread lightly fried, generously spread with a soft herb cheese and topped with finely diced field mushrooms, beans, sliced baby sweet corn and strips of smoked bacon. For a main course: trout (which once they had gutted, they filleted and quick fried) with new potatoes and a cheese and parsley source.

Cub Scouts and Scouts enjoy a weekend in London.

After travelling to London by train they enjoyed a 'flight' on the London Eye at dusk before visiting Westminster Abbey and walking past many well known London landmarks.  After a good night's sleep at Baden-Powell House everyone was ready for a walking tour of historic London and a visit to Wellington Barracks where they met a Guardsman before seeing The Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace.

In the afternoon the Cub Scouts visited Tower Bridge, enjoyed the views from the top and saw the workings of this iconic bridge. The Scouts mean while visited the Cabinet War Rooms and then took tea in the Crypt under St Martins in the Field.  In the evening the Scouts visited the National Gallery (which was such a successful visit they spent much longer there than planned), while the Cub Scouts took a river bus back to Westminster Pier and then visited Harrods Food Halls!  Back at Baden-Powell house everyone compared notes and experiences before bed!

On Sunday the morning was spent at the Science Museum, where, as well as visiting the galleries that most interested each of the small groups they were divided into, they also enjoyed attending a lecture in the impressive lecture theatre!  The Afternoon, by contrast was spent in the Natural History Museum (the dinosaurs were a firm favourite!) before catching the train home from Paddington.
